What Is PAN 2.0?

In November 2024, the government approved PAN 2.0, a project to upgrade PAN services with a single unified portal, QR-code PAN cards and faster digital services.

  • Your existing PAN card remains valid. You do not need to apply for a new one.
  • As of mid-2026, PAN services continue on the existing portals (Income Tax e-filing, Protean and UTIITSL) while the new unified system is being rolled out.
  • New cards come with a QR code that helps verify your details.

PAN Card Apply Online: Step-by-Step

Method 1: Free Instant e-PAN (Income Tax Portal)

This is the fastest and free way for individuals who do not have a PAN.

  1. Open the Income Tax e-filing portal. To open it directly, Click Here.
  2. Click on “Instant e-PAN” in the Quick Links.
  3. Click “Get New e-PAN”.
  4. Enter your Aadhaar number and tick the confirmation box.
  5. Enter the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile.
  6. Check your details from Aadhaar and submit.
  7. Your e-PAN is usually ready in a few minutes. Download it from the same page using “Check Status / Download PAN”.

Method 2: Apply on Protean (NSDL) Portal

  1. Open the Protean PAN services website. To open it, Click Here.
  2. Choose “Apply for New PAN” (Form 49A for Indian citizens).
  3. Select category (Individual) and fill in your name, date of birth, email and mobile.
  4. Choose “Submit digitally through e-KYC and e-Sign” (paperless, using Aadhaar OTP).
  5. Choose whether you want a physical PAN card or e-PAN only.
  6. Pay the fee online.
  7. Complete Aadhaar OTP e-KYC and e-Sign.
  8. Save the acknowledgement number for status checks.

Method 3: Apply on UTIITSL Portal

  1. Open the UTIITSL PAN portal. To open it, Click Here.
  2. Choose “Apply for New PAN Card (Form 49A)”.
  3. Choose digital mode (Aadhaar e-KYC) and fill in your details.
  4. Pay the fee and complete e-KYC.
  5. Save the application coupon number.

PAN Card Download (e-PAN)

  2. Click “Check Status / Download PAN”.
  3. Enter your Aadhaar number and OTP.
  4. Download the e-PAN PDF.

Note: The e-PAN PDF is password-protected. The password is usually your date of birth in DDMMYYYY format.

PAN Card Correction (Change in Details)

You can correct your name, date of birth, father’s name, photo, signature, address, mobile or email.

  1. Open the Protean or UTIITSL website (the agency through which your PAN was made, or either one).
  2. Choose “Changes or Correction in existing PAN data / Reprint of PAN Card”.
  3. Enter your PAN and choose the details you want to change.
  4. Upload proof for the change (for example, Aadhaar for name or date of birth, marriage certificate for name change after marriage).
  5. Pay the fee (about ₹50 for Indian address).
  6. Complete Aadhaar e-KYC / e-Sign.
  7. Save the acknowledgement number and track the status.

Tip: Your name and date of birth in PAN should match your Aadhaar. If they do not match, PAN-Aadhaar linking may fail.

PAN Card Reprint (Lost or Damaged Card)

If your PAN card is lost or damaged, but your details are correct, you can order a reprint.

  1. Open the Protean or UTIITSL website.
  2. Choose “Reprint of PAN Card”.
  3. Enter your PAN, Aadhaar and date of birth.
  4. Verify with OTP.
  5. Pay about ₹50 (Indian address).
  6. The new card is posted to your address. You can also download the e-PAN for immediate use.

Aadhaar PAN Link and Link Status Check

Linking PAN with Aadhaar is compulsory. If your PAN is not linked, it becomes inoperative. An inoperative PAN means you cannot use it properly for tax filing, banking and investments, and higher TDS may be deducted.
