What Is PM Awas Gramin (PMAY-G)?
PM Awas Gramin is a housing scheme for poor families living in villages. Under this scheme, the government gives money to the family to build a pucca house. The money goes directly into the bank account of the beneficiary in instalments, as the house is built step by step.
The scheme started on 1 April 2016. Its first target was to build 2.95 crore houses by March 2024. In August 2024, the government approved 2 crore more houses for the period 2024-25 to 2028-29. This makes the total target 4.95 crore houses.
Key Facts in Simple Words
- The house is usually given in the name of the woman of the family, or jointly in the names of the husband and wife.
- The family builds the house on its own, with help from trained local masons.
- The government checks each stage of work with geo-tagged photos (photos that show the exact place and time).
- Families also get support for a toilet, and can apply for other schemes like a free LPG connection under Ujjwala Yojana, electricity and drinking water.
PM Awas Gramin Progress So Far
The table below shows the figures on the official PMAY-G portal when we checked it in October 2026.
| Item | Number |
|---|---|
| Target given to states | 4,14,53,959 houses |
| Families registered | 3,97,99,265 |
| Houses sanctioned (approved) | 3,89,53,969 |
| Houses completed | 2,96,98,811 |
| Total money sent | ₹3,99,944.32 crore |
What does this chart tell you? About 3.9 crore houses have been approved, but nearly 3 crore are finished. So, if your house is sanctioned but not complete, you are not alone. Many houses are still being built.
Latest Updates on PM Awas Gramin (2026)
- New website: The official portal is now pmayg.dord.gov.in. Reports and beneficiary search are under the Awaassoft menu.
- Awaas Plus 2024 survey: New families are being added through the AwaasPlus 2024 app. It allows a self-survey and uses Aadhaar face authentication to stop fraud.
- Survey deadlines differ by state: Each state has its own survey timeline. For example, West Bengal’s survey deadline was extended from 20 July to 15 August 2026 because of heavy rain.
- Easier eligibility rules: In 2024, the income limit was raised from ₹10,000 to ₹15,000 per month, and some old rules (like owning a two-wheeler, refrigerator or landline phone) were removed.
- New rural job law: From 1 July 2026, the new VB-G RAM G law has replaced MGNREGA. PMAY-G families used to get 90 or 95 days of paid work under MGNREGA to build their house. Ask your block office how this wage support is being given now.
- New houses for states: The centre keeps approving new houses for states in 2026. For example, 1 lakh more houses were approved for West Bengal in July 2026.
Types of PM Awas Gramin Lists
Many people get confused because there is more than one PMAY-G list. Here is a simple explanation of each one.
| List name | What it is | Who is in it |
|---|---|---|
| SECC 2011 Permanent Wait List | The first list, made from the 2011 Socio Economic Caste Census | Poor rural families found in the 2011 survey |
| Awaas Plus 2018 List | A second survey to add families left out of SECC 2011 | Families added in the 2018 survey |
| Awaas Plus 2024 List | The newest survey for the 2024-29 phase, done through the AwaasPlus 2024 app | Families surveyed in 2024 to 2026 |
| Sanctioned Beneficiary List | The list of families whose house has been approved | Families who have been given a house and get instalments |
Simple tip: If you are a new applicant from the 2024 survey, look for your name in the Awaas Plus 2024 records. If your house is already approved, look in the sanctioned beneficiary list for your village.

PM Awas Gramin Eligibility 2026
Not every family can get a house under PMAY-G. The rules are simple: the scheme is for poor rural families who do not have a pucca house.
Who Can Get a House Under PMAY-G?
- Families who are houseless (have no house at all)
- Families living in a kutcha house with 0, 1 or 2 rooms, with kutcha walls and a kutcha roof
- The family must live in a rural area (village)
- The family must be found eligible in the SECC 2011 or Awaas Plus survey and verified by the Gram Sabha
- No member of the family should already have a pucca house anywhere in India
Families Who Are Included Automatically
Some very poor families are added automatically if they are found in the survey:
- Families without any shelter
- Destitute families or those living on alms
- Manual scavenger families
- Primitive tribal groups (PVTGs)
- Legally released bonded labourers
10 Rules That Make a Family Not Eligible (Exclusion Criteria)
If any one of the following is true for your family, you cannot get a house under PMAY-G. These are the revised rules from 2024.
| No. | Exclusion rule |
|---|---|
| 1 | Owns a motorised three-wheeler or four-wheeler |
| 2 | Owns mechanised three or four-wheeler farm equipment (like a tractor) |
| 3 | Has a Kisan Credit Card with a limit of ₹50,000 or more |
| 4 | Any family member is a government employee |
| 5 | Has a non-farm business registered with the government |
| 6 | Any family member earns more than ₹15,000 per month |
| 7 | Pays income tax |
| 8 | Pays professional tax |
| 9 | Owns 2.5 acres or more of irrigated land |
| 10 | Owns 5 acres or more of unirrigated land |
What Changed in the 2024 Rules?
| Rule | Old rule | New rule (from 2024) |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly income limit | ₹10,000 | ₹15,000 |
| Owning a motorised two-wheeler | Not eligible | Rule removed |
| Owning a mechanised fishing boat | Not eligible | Rule removed |
| Having a refrigerator | Not eligible | Rule removed |
| Having a landline phone | Not eligible | Rule removed |
This means many families who were left out earlier, for example because they had a motorcycle or a fridge, can now be eligible.

- Houseless families come first.
- Next come families living in kutcha houses with 0, 1 or 2 rooms.
- The Gram Sabha checks the list, and families can raise objections if a wrong name is added or a right name is missing.

How to Apply for PM Awas Gramin 2026 (Awaas Plus 2024 Survey)
There is no direct online application form on the PMAY-G website. New families are added only through the Awaas Plus 2024 survey. You can do this in two ways.
Method 1: Self-Survey Using the AwaasPlus 2024 App
- Download the AwaasPlus 2024 app from the Google Play Store. To open the app page directly, Click Here.
- Also install the Aadhaar FaceRD app, which is needed for face authentication.

- Contact your Gram Panchayat Secretary or Gram Rozgar Sahayak and ask when the survey team will visit.
- Be at home with your Aadhaar card and bank passbook when they come.
Important Points About Applying
- The survey window is set by each state. Ask your gram panchayat if the survey is still open in your area.

How do I do a PMAYG status check with my registration number?
Go to the beneficiary search page on pmayg.dord.gov.in (Stakeholders, then IAY/PMAYG Beneficiary), enter your registration number and click Submit. You will see your sanction details, instalments paid and photos of your house.

Use the village-wise list in the Awaassoft reports (Method 1 in this guide). You can also search with your Awaas Plus ID, or ask at your gram panchayat.
Where can I find my PMAY-G registration number?
Your registration number is written on your house sanction letter. You can also find it next to your name in the village-wise beneficiary list, or ask the gram panchayat office.
What is an Awaas Plus ID?
It is a 9-digit number given to families surveyed through the Awaas Plus app. You can use it on the Awaas Plus beneficiary details page to check your survey record.
Can I apply for PM Awas Gramin online?
There is no direct online form on the PMAY-G website. You can apply by doing a self-survey on the AwaasPlus 2024 app, or by getting surveyed by a surveyor through your gram panchayat, while the survey is open in your state.
