After 15 years you can extend PPF any number of times in blocks of 5 years — with fresh deposits (submit Form H within a year of maturity) or without deposits (balance keeps earning interest; one withdrawal a year allowed).
✅ Key rules
- Any Indian resident can open one PPF account (plus one for a minor child as guardian) at a post office or bank.
- Invest ₹500 to ₹1.5 lakh every financial year, in up to any number of instalments.
- Matures after 15 full financial years; can be extended in 5-year blocks.
- Interest rate is set every quarter by the Government (7.1% for Oct–Dec 2026).
💡 Earn more
- Invest before the 5th — money added after the 5th earns nothing for that month.
- A lump sum before 5th April earns interest for the full year.
- Missed ₹500 in a year? Revive with ₹50 penalty per year plus ₹500 per missed year.
🏧 Loan & withdrawal
- Loan in years 3 to 6: up to 25% of the balance at the end of the 2nd year before the loan year.
- Partial withdrawal from year 7: up to 50% of the lower of the balance at the end of the 4th previous year or the previous year — once a year.
🧾 Tax (EEE)
- Deposits up to ₹1.5 lakh qualify under Section 80C (old regime).
- Interest and maturity amount are completely tax-free.
Estimates assume today’s rate stays the same for the full period. Actual PPF rates change every quarter. Confirm with your post office or bank.
